Spring Weekend Class & Summer Travel Experience

 

Position Title:

Special Assignment - Educational Sign Language Interpreter (Spring course & Summer travel)

Assignment:

Provide ASL sign language interpretation for a Community High School District 128 student who attends Grayslake North High School for Deaf & Hard of Hearing instructional services. This student is a senior placed in college-prep level coursework who is described as kind, hard-working, social, high-functioning and independent, and who has hearing loss. This student will be enrolled in an academic course during Spring 2025 that will occur 1-2 Sundays per month, and the course will then take a 10 day educational tour to Germany, Italy and Switzerland.  This is an educational trip in which students have academic expectations and all of the adults on staff are accessible to students and on duty 24 hours per day.  The educational tour will follow a strict itinerary and the Educational Interpreter will be expected to participate in all activities that their designated student attends. 


Fall 2024:

  • December 4th (subject to change) Parent/Student Informational Meeting from 6:00-7:30pm at Grayslake North High School (required for interpreting services to student and to understand trip expectations)

Spring 2025:  

  • Exploring World Cultures Course @ Grayslake North High School
  • January - June 2025 - *All anticipated course dates attached, however these could change slightly in Nov. 2024
  • Class sessions typically meet 1 Sunday per month, usually between the hours of 3:00pm-8:00pm (Times subject to change, class typically meets for 4 hour increments), adding up to approximately 20 hours in total
  • 2 full-day Field Trips on Fridays during the school day
  • Possibility of asynchronous classes once a month in the evening, TBD

Summer 2025:  

  • 10 day Educational Tour to Germany, Italy and Switzerland 
  • Departure window is May 30 - June 14, 2025 (departure date confirmed in late February 2025)
  • One 4-hour post-departure class the day after returning from the trip (anticipated between June 10 - June 14, 2025)

Qualifications:

  • ISBE issued Educational Sign Language Interpreter Approval License
  • Currently valid passport through at least December 2025
  • Background check with CHSD 128 

Employee Status:

Special Assignment employee of CHSD 128 for the purposes of the Spring course and Summer travel experience

Special Assignment Details:

Educational Interpreter travel expectations include:

  • Airports: Assisting with communication at check-in counters, security checkpoints, boarding gates, and baggage claims
  • Study Abroad: Extended travel interpreters are available for all aspects of study abroad, including classes and extracurricular activities. January - June
  • Hotels: Facilitating communication during check-in, check-out, and in-room services
  • Tourist Attractions: Providing interpretation services for guided tours, museum exhibits, and cultural events
  • Restaurants: Helping to communicate with staff, place orders, and understand menus
  • Public Transportation: Aiding in navigation, ticket purchasing, and understanding announcements
  • Emergency Situations: Interpreting between assigned student and medical professionals, law enforcement, or other emergency service providers
  • Social Situations: Communicating amongst students to support relationship building. This could be during the student's free time, if she needs or requests it
  • Must attend all class sessions before the actual trip between January and May. (Tentative schedule attached - typically  Sundays 1 times per month, 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm)
  • At least one female chaperone must be present with student for instances that involve medical intervention 
  • Travel with a carry on only, responsible for transporting your own luggage. May bring a backpack.
  • The assignment is for interpreting for one female student, but you will be expected to follow all expectations of D128 Staff. There will be NO drinking or smoking on the trip.
  • This trip will include numerous physical activities everyday, including a couple of miles walking per day, biking, swimming, etc. Applicants must have the ability and the energy to participate in these activities. 
  • Flexibility and timeliness with daily travel plans required. There will be early mornings and late nights for which all staff must be punctual and ready. Some mornings may begin at 5:00am and some evenings the tour group may return to the hotel after 10:00pm.
  • Accommodations - adults share rooms like the students. If you would like a private room at your own expense, cost is TBD, you must submit your request at least 110 days before the departure date.

Compensation:

All travel costs included (Value: $4,979):

  • roundtrip airfare and transportation
  • Hotels with shared adult lodging and private bathrooms (see above for details on obtaining private accommodations)
  • Breakfast and dinner daily
  • Full-time tour director
  • Daily activities, tours and entrances to attractions 
  • Global Travel Protection Plus Insurance
  • Swiss Fondue Evening
  • Daily tips for travel hosts
  • Class/staff t-shirts
  • Spring Class field trip fees
  • Visa/Levy fees for travel in Australia & New Zealand

Salary of $3,100 for the Spring course and Summer travel:

  • $500* to be paid on March 28, 2025 for Spring course work 

*each Spring course date not worked will result in deduction of $100/day from total stipend


  • $500* to be paid on May 30, 2025 for Spring course work 

*each Spring course date not worked will result in deduction of $100/day from total stipend


  • The remaining $2,100** to be paid on June 30, 2025 following completion of Spring course and Summer travel

**each Summer travel date and/or post-travel class date not worked will result in deduction of $250/day from total stipend


Personal expenses might include:

  • Daily lunch, snacks, souvenirs, other additional personally determined expenses
